She Almost Did Not Swipe

Amara had a rule: no long distance. She had watched friends burn out on video calls and airport goodbyes. But TenderWomens kept showing her David, and she kept scrolling past him — until one night she stopped.

"His profile said he was learning Yoruba because he believed language was the most intimate thing you could share with someone," Amara says. "Who is this man."

David was an architect in Amsterdam who had been learning West African languages for two years after a trip to Ghana changed his life. When Amara finally messaged him — in Yoruba — he responded in kind. Badly. But he tried.

"She corrected my grammar in the first message," David laughs. "I knew immediately."

They met in Lagos six weeks after matching. David proposed on their one year anniversary in Amsterdam. They married in May 2025. The ceremony was bilingual. The food was spectacular.
